Dystopian Novel: (n)a story that revolves around a hellish, usually politically driven world that is, within the story itself, viewed as utopia. The plot usually follows one or more characters that slowly come to the realization that their world is not as perfect as society or the government is telling everyone.
I have a copy of The Handmaid’s Tale right next to me…And right now I’m reading another book by Margaret Atwood, The Year of the Flood (sequel to Oryx and Crake), which is kind of dystopian, but not in the same way The Handmaid’s Tale or, say, 1984 is where it’s really in your face. Parts of it are kind of post-apocalyptic/speculative fiction, and other parts have hints of dystopia (it’s told through a lot of flashbacks, so that’s why it’s different in some parts).
